Types of Fire Extinguishers: Which One Should You Choose?

March is here, which means it's Fire Prevention Month again! It's time to ignite our passion for fire safety and equip ourselves with the right tools and knowledge to prevent fires.

Fires can strike anyone, anywhere, and at any time, and having the right tools and knowledge can be the difference between a minor mishap and a catastrophic disaster. So, let's dig deeper and learn about one of the most critical tools in our fire safety toolkit: the fire extinguisher.

To begin with, we need to know the different classes of fire to help us choose the right type of fire extinguisher.

We have Class A, which involves everyday combustibles like wood and paper; Class B, which includes flammable liquids like gasoline and oil; Class C, which involves electrical equipment; Class D, which is caused by flammable metals; and Class K, which involves cooking oils and fats. It's crucial to know the type of fire we're dealing with because using the wrong type of extinguisher can worsen the situation.

Now, let's talk about the different types of extinguishers and when to use them:

  1. Water Extinguishers - They are perfect for Class A fires as they cool down the burning material.
  2. Foam Extinguishers - They work for Class A and B fires by smothering the flames and cutting off the oxygen supply.
  3. Dry Powder Extinguishers - They are versatile and can be used for Class A, B, and C fires. However, the powder can be messy and impair visibility. Some examples are Palmer Pt 5, Palmer Pt 10, Palmer Pt 50, Palmer Ptes-1 Tes, Palmer Ptes-2.5 Tes, Palmer Pt 20, Anzen MDL3 ABC Dry Chemical, Anzen MDL5 ABC Dry Chemical, Anzen MDL10 ABC Dry Chemical 6.4G, Anzen MDL15 ABC Dry Chemical, and Anzen MDL1 ABC Dry Chemical - all of which can be found at your nearest ACE Hardware Store.
  4. Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers - They are ideal for Class B and C fires as they displace oxygen, extinguishing the flames.
  5. Wet Chemical Extinguishers - Used for those pesky Class K fires involving cooking oils and fats.
  6. Halotron Extinguishers - Highly durable, built to last, and capable of extinguishing Class A, Class B, and Class C fires. Partial use of this fire extinguisher is possible while the remaining content is still usable. Some examples are Palmer PH 1, Palmer PH 5, and Palmer PH 10, available at your nearest ACE Hardware Store.

Having the correct type of extinguisher is not enough; we also need to know how to use it properly. We must use the PASS technique, which stands for Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side. Following these steps will ensure that we're using the extinguisher correctly and effectively.

But it's not just about having the right tools and knowledge, we also need to practice proper fire safety procedures. We need to have working smoke detectors and an escape plan. We should regularly test our smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. It's also crucial to remember that not all fires can be put out with a fire extinguisher. If the fire is too large or out of control, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department.

In conclusion, Fire Prevention Month is a timely reminder to take fire safety seriously. Let's use this opportunity to equip ourselves with the right tools and knowledge to prevent fires. Knowing the different types of fires and which extinguisher to use can make a significant difference in the outcome of a fire incident.

Let's always practice proper fire safety procedures, and most importantly, let's be prepared. With our combined efforts, we can keep ourselves, our loved ones, and our homes safe from harm!
