How To Care For Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are a beautiful way to welcome guests into your home. To keep them looking in top shape you will need to give them some attention and care.

  1. Make sure anything that is placed on the wood floors has felt pads installed on the pressure points. Chair legs, table legs, stationary furniture and so on. There are pads that stick on and others that get hammered onto chair legs which tend to hold up better.
  2. If you have pets makes sure their nails are trimmed. Animals can cause a bunch of problems with floor finishes and those small scratches will add up and make your floor look damaged.
  3. Use a rug or pad in front of wet areas like kitchen sinks or bathroom sinks if the wood floor extends into those areas. Wood floors can get wet you don’t have to worry but spills should be wiped up quickly. If water stands on an area say overnight you may get some curling from the floor boards, don’t worry. Place a fan over that area on low and let run for 2-3 days to dry things out and the floor will go back down after about a week.
  4. Use a neutral cleaner on the floor. No offense to the age old advice you got to use vinegar and water, but vinegar is an acid and even diluted it will dull the finish. There are several makers of neutral cleaners that when used with a micro-fiber mop will keep your floors clean and shiny.
  5. Over time you may find areas that are scratched, the finish is not as shiny and so on. In the past your only option was to have the floors refinished professionally. Now you can buy wood polish or wood gel that are easy to apply. You will be amazed at how refreshed your wood floors will look and its super affordable.
  6. If you have small scratches, scratch repair pens are a good option to disguise the marks. The pens come in many different wood matching options, make sure you get the one that matches your floor type. Be sure to clean the floor before applying the pen. To ensure you like the results, test the pen in a small area to make sure you like the finish and it matches.
